The Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Kilolo Kijakazi, recently announced a change to the Social Security program. This change includes the ability for individuals to self-select their sex on their Social Security number records.

According to a recent blog post from the Social Security Administration (SSA), Acting Commissioner Kijakazi declared the updated procedure an attempt at “reducing barriers and ensuring the fair treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Individuals who choose to utilize this new option will need to apply for a replacement Social Security Number card and must provide verification of their identity.
