With the tax return due date around the corner, many retirees may be asking themselves do I need to file a tax return if my income is mostly Social Security payments? Unfortunately, the answer is not so straightforward.

Individuals might need to still file a return based on other matters, according to Market Watch. These reasons include if:

  • any amount was withheld from earnings (this includes Social Security payments)
  • individuals were due a stimulus check in 2021 and didn’t receive it
  • incomes from other sources were also received for the household (including any income your spouse makes)
  • any self-employment income was earned
  • medical expenses were paid through a Health Savings Account

These are not the only reasons individuals may file a tax return. If you have any questions on whether or not to file, try using the IRS’ interactive tool.
