According to this article from Andrew Keshner at Market Watch (via MSN), any government shutdown should not impact beneficiaries’ payments.

In fact, the article explains that the SSA’s contingency plan says it will “continue activities critical to our direct-service operations and those needed to ensure accurate and timely payment of benefits.”

Although the government shutdown should not impact beneficiary payments, the debt ceiling might. The article references a previous opinion piece by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen where she explains that if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, nearly 50 million seniors may see delays in receiving their beneficiary checks.
