On June 7, the Social Security Administration (SSA) warned individuals that there are new reports showing scammers using old techniques to gain trust. According to the post, these scammers are emailing and texting pictures of both real and fake law enforcement credentials and badges in an effort to make them appear legitimate.
Because of this revival, federal law enforcement agencies are warning individuals, especially senior citizens, to remain skeptical of any emails or text messages claiming to be from government or law enforcement employees.
The Social Security Administration reminds individuals of a few tips to protect themselves:
- Remain cautious and skeptical
- Don’t click on links or attachments
- Refrain from spending any money
If you ever think you’ve been targeted by a scam, be sure to stop communicating with the scammer, notify any financial institutions to protect your accounts, and file a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
