Few if any figures loom as large in the history of Scotland as William Wallace, who was executed 719 years ago today. Known for his bravery, leadership and unwavering commitment to Scottish independence, Wallace rose to prominence during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th century. His valiant efforts to resist English domination have cemented his status as a national hero and a symbol of Scottish pride. Let’s take a closer look.
Born around 1270, Wallace emerged as a key figure in the struggle against English rule following the death of King Alexander III of Scotland in 1286.
The subsequent power vacuum led to a period of instability, with rival claimants to the Scottish throne vying for control and the English King Edward I seizing the opportunity to assert his authority over Scotland.
Wallace’s military prowess and charisma soon made him a rallying point for Scots who yearned for freedom from English oppression. His most famous victory came at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, where a much smaller Scottish force under Wallace’s command defeated a larger English army. This unexpected triumph bolstered Scottish morale and inspired further resistance against the English invaders.
Wallace’s fortunes, however, took a turn for the worse following the Scottish defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. Despite his efforts to continue the fight for independence, Wallace was eventually captured by the English in 1305 and brought to trial on charges of treason and acts of rebellion against the crown.

On August 22nd, 1305, William Wallace was brutally executed — hanged, drawn and quartered — in London. His final moments, as he faced his captors with dignity and defiance, are legendary in Scottish folklore and history. Wallace’s martyrdom galvanized the Scottish people’s resolve to continue the struggle for freedom, laying the foundation for future generations to carry on his noble cause.
The legacy of William Wallace lives on to this day, symbolizing the enduring spirit of Scottish independence and resilience in the face of adversity. Monuments, memorials and commemorations across Scotland pay tribute to his memory and the sacrifices he made in the pursuit of liberty.
