Union Demands More Finances to Improve Social Security

Union officials representing workers at the Social Security Administration (SSA) asked Congress to provide $16.5 billion in emergency appropriations for fiscal 2023. These finances would allow the agency to improve policies, address a lack of staffing, and help with the long lines and backlog that have accrued.

According to this article, the SSA is currently operating with 4,000 fewer employees than 12 years ago — while the number of Social Security beneficiaries has risen by 21 percent. This has created conditions of an overloaded, overworked labor force and under-performing service for benefit recipients.
