Ever wonder what can be done if you fall victim to a scam and your Social Security number is stolen? Look no further, according to this article, there are a few things that you can do to protect yourself:

  • First, you should alert any of the three major credit-reporting agencies — Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. It’s important to note that fraud reports must be renewed every 90 days until the theft is resolved.
  • Next, you should run credit reports to look for any issues that can be immediately disputed.
  • Also request a fraud alert and/or credit freeze; this will restrict access to your credit report. However, a freeze to credit must be done with all three credit bureaus.
  • Finally, always make sure to report the theft and file an identity theft report.
