According to this article from GovExec, a group of lawmakers demanded clarification and more information about the recent change of command at the Social Security Administration (SSA).

The decision to fire Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul was made after Saul refused to resign from the position. However, it has continued to remain unclear what the acting commissioner’s role entails and “clarification on how her powers may be constrained due to her status as an acting official.”

The article explains that lawmakers also asked for more information on Kilolo Kijakazi, the appointed acting commissioner, and her qualifications for the position. Additionally, lawmakers requested the official date she took the position. This date will allow lawmakers to ensure her tenure does not go over the 210-day limit.

The article continues. It explains that the SSA became a “lightning rod for criticism” during the pandemic. The latest critique surrounds the overwhelming amounts of mail that remains unprocessed. Despite the issues, the article cites lawmakers explaining Commissioner Saul’s remarkable success “in managing the service delivery to beneficiaries during the biggest management challenge SSA has faced.”
