Hurricanes can be scary, especially if you are not prepared. And unfortunately, having three named hurricanes out at one time makes it likely that many of us will need a hurricane plan. There is no one size fits all for this, but, here is a guide on hurricane preparedness from the U.S. Government, that should help you think through what should be in your plan. Some things are obvious and good to have in advance – one place with contact information for family and friends, copies of critical documentation including insurance and bank accounts, medical prescription information, etc. Others will be required every time there is a hurricane – ensuring you have enough food, gas in the car, water in the house, cash on hand, etc.
The important thing for a hurricane is to plan in advance what you will do and where you will go. If you are required to evacuate, where will you stay? Do you need to make reservations or can you just show up? Do you need to bring food/supplies with you? Who knows where you will be? If you are able to stay in your home, do you have enough water and food to last you a few days if there is no power? Batteries for your flashlights, fill up the bathtub with water so you can flush the toilet even if there is no running water. What are your hurricane plans for your pets?
When we were growing up, we evacuated multiple times a year for hurricanes. We had it down to a science, to this day I still go through the checklist in my head despite living far from the ocean. It allowed us to be able to help friends and neighbors that required assistance.
Good luck to you and be safe!
