The Office of the Inspector General for the Social Security Administration has released an update to previous warnings about Social Security scams. According to the update, scammers have utilized new tactics as they target senior citizens.

Scammers are using the names of real employees as an improved tactic. These names come from both the Social Security Administration and the Office of Inspector General.

However, it is important to note these names are accessible through an internet search or through the corresponding agency’s website. This does not mean that the calls, emails, or text messages are legitimate.

In addition, scammers have been noted using additional methods including:

  • citing false badge numbers
  • sending emails with attachments containing personal information detailing a supposed “investigation”
  • texting links that claim to provide more information about supposed issues relating to Social Security

Although scammers have improved tactics, the update reiterates that the Social Security Administration will contact you via mail.

The Office of the Inspector General has archived previous advisories on their website. In addition, the website offers an option for any individual who encounters a suspected scam or fraud to report it.
