Social Security Scams Target More Seniors

Social Security scams seem to be on the rise as we all take to technology to keep in touch during this socially distanced time. Unfortunately, seniors are often at higher risk for being a target in these schemes.

According to CNBC, 53% of those targeted by such scams in the last 3 months were seniors.

Here are some things to be on the lookout for:

  • Unsolicited calls
  • An offer of protection from identity theft for transfer of money
  • Asking you not to tell others about the call
  • Demanding unique forms of payment such as gift cards or cryptocurrency

Keep your Social Security safe and help the Social Security Administration stop scams by reporting any attempts of fraud This can be done through the agency’s Inspector General’s website or by calling the Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
